Most businesses don't need a new website

The website isn't the problem. The problem is the manual work behind it. Fix the system first, and the website finally has something real to point to.

  • Systems with Soul

You don't need a new website. I know that's a strange thing for someone who builds websites to say, but it's true for most of the businesses that come to me asking for one.

What you actually need is fewer things falling through the cracks. A new coat of paint on the front door doesn't matter much if the plumbing behind the walls is shot.

The website is rarely the problem

When a business owner tells me their site isn't working, I ask what not working actually looks like. Almost never is the answer that it looks outdated. It's usually something like this.

  • Leads come in but nobody follows up for three days
  • Booking happens over text, email, and DMs with no single source of truth
  • The same information gets typed into four different places by hand
  • Nobody knows which client paid, which is overdue, or what was promised

None of that gets fixed by a redesign. A prettier site just gets you more leads that fall into the same broken process.

Systems come before design

A website is the front door. It's not the house. If the rooms inside are disorganized, moving the furniture near the entrance doesn't help anyone who walks in.

Before we talk about design, I want to know how a lead becomes a client. What happens after someone books, after someone pays, after a job is done. Where does that information go, and who acts on it.

Fix the system first

Once the work behind the site runs on its own, the website finally has something real to point to. It stops being a brochure and starts being infrastructure.
